How Bookshop.org Used The Pandemic To Take On Amazon and Save Independent Bookstores

This the story of Bookshop.org, a retailer that started during the pandemic and challenged Amazon while also supporting independent booksellers.

At the start of the Covid-19 global pandemic, books were considered non-essential, which meant certain places had to wait large periods of time to receive their books. This could take a couple of weeks or even months. While this was happening, independent bookstores were faced with another huge hurdle. How could they support the book community when some were forced to close during statewide mandates, or they wanted to ensure the safety of their workers and community? That’s where Andy Hunter came up with Bookshop.org.

Bookshop.org is an online bookstore with a mission to financially support local, independent bookstores. Hunter discusses why independent bookstores are important, what these bookstores provide that Amazon cannot, and how he successful took on this powerhouse, while raising more than $7 million (and counting!) for independent bookstores.
